The Story of Soul Soil Microgreens & The Two Ty’s Tiran “Ty” Boyland, and Tyriek “Ty” McDaniel, having been cousins by marriage for over a decade, have always shared commonalities, even outside of the name. At family gatherings they would always find a way to separate from the crowd to discuss at full length the big topic of the time. It was at one of these very gatherings that the two Ty’s shared their ambition to become more health conscious and grow vegetables at their respective homes, not knowing at the time, but Soul Soil Microgreens was born. Conversations of social justice, inequality, lack of equity and financial opportunity in black and brown communities, sparked something electric into the hearts and minds of Ty and Ty. This meeting of the minds had gone far beyond a self-serving purpose. This undertaking had the potential to create real change, not just locally, but nationally. Spending the better part of a year researching like madmen, the Ty’s filled their homes with seed, soil, lights, and fixtures everywhere, much to the dismay of their wives, but, they persisted. Finding the time from their busy careers as music and marketing professional independently, they perfected their new craft. While growing microgreens is not new in the sense of uniqueness, it is something that isn’t currently a business model for African Americans in Memphis, TN. There is also a deeper motivation aside from gaining revenue. There is much more at stake with Soul Soil Microgreens than a black or red line, it’s about changing lives, and changing them now as opposed to later. The two Ty’s are looking forward to providing local customers with a superior microgreens taste and experience, and communities of color with the tools necessary to turn food desert communities into communities with abundant access to healthier food, grown self sufficiently.
