Menimist - Short Film
Written & Directed by Brodie Rowlands
Swinburne Screen & Media
In the year 2060, an assertive businesswoman orders a male robot sex doll/companion. Their relationship is going relatively well, until the Ai-robot begins to learn behaviour from the films and material around him- when she returns from work she finds he has inherited some violent and overtly sexualised behaviour- as a response, she unexpectedly turns violent. Realising that it's just a robot and she has the ability to act out this aggression, she continues to test how far she can push this robot, as a cathartic response to the overt and subliminal violence and objectification she is receiving.
This is a poignant comment on female violence, a form of expression that is broadly denied in representations of women in film. It is also a castration of the male gaze to make way for a female dominated voice in the space of this short.
