Broadcasting in the Republic of Maldives began in the name of Malé Radio on December 29th, 1962 which is the service presently known as Dhivehi Raajjeyge Adu (DRA). The first Radio service started with clear objectives to inform, educate and entertain the public. Sixteen years later, with the assistance from Japanese government the country's first television service began on 29th March 1978 by the name Television Maldives (TVM).

Since the Commencement of both Radio & TV media in the country, technical training is being given at all times, to create a leading staff base, though at times the training just fed the minimal requirement to run the stations.

However, with the Commencement of the Maldives National Broadcasting Corporation (MNBC), under a Presidential Declaration on the 22nd of December 2008, special priority was being given to training the staff-base and develop technical skills in the field. With the ratification of the Presidential Declaration, the staff-base of then separately governed Television Maldives and Dhivehi Raajeige Adu were transferred as Staff of MNBC and began work as one on the 1st of July 2009. The date also marks the opening of MNBC Media Training Centre, which is widely attributed to current Managing Director of PSM Mr Ibrahim Khaleel, who was then the head of MNBC. It was his dream and initiative that led to flourishing the idea of the importance of offering continues training opportunities for the staff-base to enhance their professional and technical skills.

As of 8 February 2012, the stations became a public service broadcaster, under the umbrella of Maldives Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), which was established following the ratification of the country's first Public Broadcasting Act. Under MBC the training centre continued its journey and contributed to staff development of the Corporation.

On 30 March 2015, a bill was sent to the Parliament (People's Majlis) to dissolve MBC and established a new company to run state media, named Public Service Media (PSM). The Public Service Media Act obligates PSM to provide TV, Radio, Online, Print Media services and as well as to establish a professional Academy to train staff-base and provide much-needed training for the media industry.

The objective of Maldives Media Institute is to resolve the capacity building challenges faced by the media sector by providing the platform to offer domestic and international courses to the industry players and potential candidates interested to join the industry. It is imperative to develop strategic goals and objectives in this regard and gradually, move towards achieving the main objective of enhancing democracy newly introduced to the country via media evolution. This will only be possible when a vibrant, professional and active media sector is developed with the well-equipped talent pool.
