Gerakbudaya Bookstore

GB Gerakbudaya Enterprise Sdn. Bhd. was founded in 1998 by Chong Ton Sin (aka Pak Chong) and is based in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia.

We distribute books that embody social awareness, critical and alternative perspectives, and the hidden histories of Malaysia, Southeast Asia and the wider world we live in. Gerakbudaya is dedicated to circulating timely and important books, breaking down artificial barriers between writers/thinkers in institutions and everyone else, and generating informed discussions of important issues in our lives by providing different views and fresh insights.

We are a distributor for many important Malaysian and international publishers, institutes and NGOs such as IDEAS, Buku Fixi, Silverfish, Terfaktab, Merpati Jingga, Center for Orang Asli Concerns, Sang Freud and SUARAM.

The SIRD imprint (Strategic Information and Research Development Centre) is published and distributed by Gerakbudaya. It focuses on academic books with a critical perspective and progressive message, and covers all disciplines within the social sciences and humanities. With topics ranging from economics to ecology, pop culture to pantun, SIRD is increasingly being recognised as a premier non-university book publisher in Malaysia, perhaps even surpassing university publishers.

Besides publishing and distributing books, SIRD is committed to providing local and international scholars with the opportunity to present their research to local audiences. We provide the space, the place and the platform to organise seminars, forums, workshops and discussions in a freer atmosphere. SIRD enables individuals to engage and exchange views, to voice opinions and to debate their positions in an open and rational way.
